At an Oniru birthday, the celebrant's driver gave the toast
I go to plenty parties, but this one. Madam's 50th in Oniru, everything ivory, husband held up in Abuja as usual. MC says who knows the celebrant best, come and talk. Her DRIVER stands up. Sixteen years he's driven her. Four minutes this man spoke. Her mother's name. The year her sister died. What she orders when she's sad. The song that makes her cry, he even hummed it small. The whole hall was sniffing. Then oga joins by video call to give his own speech and says happy 49th.

The bride's ex catered the wedding

First of all the jollof was the best I've eaten this year, put that on record. Nobody checked the name on the catering contract. The caterer was the bride's ex. He was professional, I'll give him that, he didn't come out of the kitchen once. But dessert. Every plate had one word written on it in chocolate. Our table didn't understand until table 4 started comparing plates across the hall. Put together it said she still has my hoodie and my peace. Table 9 got PEACE. We took pictures with it.

WHAT: a small circle on the field. WHO: anyone brave. HOW: write one confession on paper, drop it in the bowl, we read them out with no names. Rule 1: nothing leaves the circle. Rule 2: if yours is read and you laugh, you buy the suya. Last time a man cried and a woman clapped.

DJ diaries: a guest paid me ₦20k to play one song and ₦30k to never play it again

Wedding. An uncle requests an old highlife track. Fine. Crowd goes mad. Then the bride's mother appears with her purse and a face like judgment day. Turns out that was the song playing when the groom's father danced with someone who was not the groom's mother in 1998. I've been doing this eight years. I now ask families for a do-not-play list. It's longer than the playlist.

His second phone rang in her bag

The groom disappeared for nearly forty minutes during his own traditional wedding. The bride asked me to call him. I dialled. A phone started ringing inside the chief bridesmaid's bag. She switched it off without looking at anybody, left the hall and came back ten minutes later. The groom returned through another entrance. Both behaved normally for the rest of the day. The bride has posted that it was perfect. I'm holding information that could turn 600 wedding pictures into evidence.

My manager moved our Friday meeting without being asked so I could pray Jumat. I almost cried.

I never asked. I only said once that I leave at 12:30 on Fridays. Two weeks later, the Friday 1pm meeting was moved to 3pm with no explanation. Nobody said anything, they just moved the calendar. I have worked in places where I had to hide my prayer mat. I thanked him quietly. He said it's just a calendar. It is not just a calendar.

The MC read out the money

My cousin's introduction on Saturday. I'm still recovering. The groom's people brought the envelope. Normal thing, you collect, you smile, you dance. This MC, God knows who sent him, opened it. On the microphone: the family of the groom has presented one hundred and twenty thousand naira. You could hear the AC. Then my uncle stood up and told him to count it again. And the MC COUNTED IT AGAIN. On the microphone. Note by note. The groom's mother has not picked anybody's call since.

5-a-side on Sunday evening. Bad players only. I mean it.

If you've ever been picked first, this isn't for you. We play 45 minutes, argue for 30 and drink malt after. Bring water and low expectations.
