My mother-in-law slapped me in front of guests, I slapped her back, who apologises first?

I know I should not have done it. She slapped me first over the food, I was angry, and a lot of people had phones out. My husband says I must go first because she is his mother and she is older. I say sorry belongs to the person who started it. Settle this for us.
